Sometimes we think of mindfulness and completely emptying your mind into a blank slate.
Mindfulness is about managing the thoughts that come into your mind.
First, acknowledge your thought.
Second, appreciate the thought as it entered your mind no matter what it is.
Third, use imagery to imagine moving the thought to an external location such as a closet, time out chair, on a leaf floating down a stream, floating away with the clouds.
